De-ICE-olation Online Artist Workshop Series
April 2 - June 21, 2020
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the call to self-isolate for the health and safety of all of our community members, Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership, in collaboration with the Inuit Art Foundation, hosted a series of online Inuit artist-led workshops and presentations to help us stay connected, alone together!
Over the course of 12 weeks, Inuit artists from across the north and south led 27 workshops, tutorials, and Q&A sessions on everything from parka making to throat singing, graphic design, beadwork, embroidery, makeup, and more!

Join us on June 21st for to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a full day of public programming to close out the De-ICE-olation workshop series: storytelling, performances, artist talks, film screenings, and more!
In this live lesson, Sylvia Cloutier, performing artist and former producer of popular Nunavut cooking shows, takes us through the steps of making a healthy tuktuviniq (caribou) soup. Other healthy wild game or meats may be substituted. All welcome!
Award-winning throatsingers from PIQSIQ, Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik and Kayley Inuksuk Mackay will give a one-and-a-half half hour long introductory workshop to throatsinging. This workshop is open to Inuit women only.
On Tuesday June 9, at 2:00pm, Bailey Johnston will lead a one-hour long makeup tutorial on how to achieve a “Pink Fantasy” look.
Join us on Friday, May 29th at 2pm for a lesson in Contemporary Children’s Songs in Inuktitut with Miali Coley-Sudlovenick!
Kayla Bruce will teach us how to make beaded earrings on Monday May 25th. This workshop is for Indigenous people only, thank you!
Ashley Kilabuk-Savard will show participants how to create their own simple beaded necklace, involving planning their necklace pattern and learning about beading processes and techniques. This workshop is for Inuit only, thank you!
Ujarak Appadoo will take us through how to make an amaaruti pattern for a child using a pattern used herself for her panik, based on measurements of a little girl.
Do you like comics and want to learn more about how to create them? Join Napatsi Folger for a lesson on the art of comic-making from the simplicity of stick figure comics about daily life, to topics that range into more artistic and emotional territory. This workshop is open to everyone!
Mixed-media artist Michale Massie will demonstrate the process of making earrings with wood and silver, using a technique called reticulation, where the silver is heated to the point of the surface melting, creating a textured surface.
Join us at 2:00pm on May 9th for this “De-ICE-olation” online Inuit artist workshop featuring the multi-talented beadwork artist Lydia Audlaluk as she walks us through the steps to making an Inuk-style beaded necklace.

Make your own stop-motion animation! We will post a video tutorial of Inuit Futures 2020 Artist-in-Residence Glenn Gear introducing affordable stop-motion animation techniques using a jointed paper puppet. Then join Glenn on Thursday May 7th, for a 1-hour live Q&A on animation techniques, puppets and more!
This 1-hour workshop with Vicky auf der Mauer will focus on ways to scale your creative passion into an entrepreneurial opportunity. Come with your questions about self-employment as a creative! This workshop is for Indigenous women only, please.

Lisa Michelin of North West River, Labrador, offers an introductory lesson on Caribou Hair Tufting. This workshop is open to Indigenous peoples only, please.
This instructional video and follow-up Q&A features multi-talented artist, designer and educator, Thomassie Mangiok. Thomassie will share his professional tips and tricks for how to excel at logo design, sharing how he moves from initial sketches through to the final design.
This Sunday evening, Haana-SikSik (Melo) Lavallée will host an intimate Stitch’ Bitchin’ Craft Circle, where participants are invited to join the live session and work on whatever projects they want to start or finish! If you’re a crafter you are welcome to join this informal gathering and share your project in process.

Due to overwhelming demand, award-winning throatsinger from Silla + Rise, Charlotte Qamaniq, is back with another one-hour long introductory workshop to throatsinging for beginners. This workshop is open to Inuit only. Space is limited, so please do not re-register if you were in the first workshop.
Lear the element of making a parka from accomplished seamstress Papatsi Kotierk. A recorded video will be posted on Monday of Papatsi sharing some tips and tricks for parka making — including how to sew zippers and pockets — followed by a live Q&A on everything sewing on Tuesday at 2:00 pm

Raeann will share a demonstration by making an etching on a mirror, sharing tips and tricks for this uncommon craft while also providing viewers with a list of tools and materials needed to try this at home.
Acclaimed seamstress Victoria Okpik will provide tips and tricks for how to cut and attach fur trim to parkas, amautiit, and other garments, and show us how to make fur pom-poms, during this live one-hour workshop. This workshop is open for all, and participants are welcome to watch and ask questions or follow along if you can!
